A court has sentenced ten individuals to life imprisonment in connection with the 2013 Jhiram Valley Maoist attack, which resulted in the death of senior Congress leaders and security personnel.
On September 5, 2023, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court convicted ten individuals under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code related to criminal conspiracy and murder. The convictions stem from their involvement in the 2013 Jhiram Valley Maoist attack that took place on May 25, 2013, when over 150 Maoists ambushed a Congress convoy in Bastar’s Jhiram Ghati ahead of Assembly elections. The attack resulted in the deaths of 29 individuals, including senior Congress leader Nand Kumar Patel and his son Dinesh, former MLA Uday Mudliyar, and party leader Mahendra Karma. Additionally, ten security personnel were killed.
According to the investigation, the Jhiram Valley attack was primarily targeted at Mahendra Karma. The NIA filed a chargesheet against nine arrested individuals on September 25, 2014, and submitted a supplementary chargesheet against 30 more accused persons on September 28, 2015. While 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, one of them died during trial. At least 28 more accused persons are still wanted.
