Two former students of Chitkara University were arrested on Friday under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
The Punjab Police arrested two individuals, Himanshu and Aryan, who are former students of Chitkara University for allegedly instigating students by spreading misleading messages on social media platforms. The arrests came after the unrest that broke out at the private institute following false reports of two women students missing from the university's hostel.
According to The Indian Express, the rumors began circulating on social media on the night of September 25. The arrested individuals are accused of inciting students by spreading misleading messages in multiple social media groups.
The protesters damaged two police vehicles and assaulted a police officer during the protest. They also alleged that the officer was under the influence of alcohol when he arrived on campus to control the situation. However, it is not confirmed whether this allegation is true.
On Friday, Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said the arrested persons have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita pertaining to attempt to murder, wrongful confinement, obstructing a public servant, assault on a public servant, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, disturbing public peace, rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy.
