Students protested against an alleged rape incident at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, resulting in violent protests and property damage. The police have registered an FIR, formed a Special Investigation Team, and conducted a scientific investigation.
An FIR has been filed against an unknown person on charges of rape following the staging of protests by students at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara due to an alleged incident of sexual assault on campus. The protests that began late Saturday night turned violent early Sunday morning, with students damaging university property, setting some objects on fire, and blocking the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway. According to PTI, the FIR was registered based on statements recorded from students by the Punjab Police.
The alleged sexual assault is said to have occurred three days prior inside Girls Hostel 3 on campus, as reported by The Indian Express, which also mentioned that students claim the university administration did not take action after the incident. Jalandhar Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Naveen Singla confirmed this and added that a Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the matter.
Singla later stated that they will conduct a scientific investigation alongside the university's representatives, and if a culprit is identified, they will be apprehended. He also clarified that they are verifying the facts.
After the protests, the university issued a statement denying the rumors circulating about the alleged incident, stating that certain anti-social elements were spreading false information through social media, attempting to disturb the peaceful academic environment of the university.
