In a press conference held in Moscow today, Ella Pamfilova, Chairperson of the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC), announced that the ruling United Russia party has secured a significant lead in the ongoing parliamentary election for the 9th State Duma. According to the CEC, after 95.18% of the ballots were counted, United Russia led with 57.83% of the vote. The Communist Party of the Russian Federation followed with 13.81%, while the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia secured 8.98%. New People and A Just Russia garnered 7.96% and 4.96% of the votes respectively.
The State Duma, Russia’s permanent legislative body, is composed of 450 deputies. Half of the seats are distributed proportionally in accordance with party lists, while the remaining 225 are elected through single-mandate constituencies nationwide under a relative-majority voting system. A total of 10 political parties participated in the election.
Turnout in this election, held from Friday to Sunday, was reported to be 59.32%, higher than the 51.72% in 2021. The final results are expected to be announced on Friday.
This parliamentary election is significant as it marks the first after the Russian military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
Pamfilova also criticised Western leaders and institutions for groundlessly smearing Russia’s elections.
