An eighth-month pregnant Trinamool Congress supporter in West Bengal's Cooch Behar delivered a stillborn baby two days after she was assaulted allegedly by Bharatiya Janata Party workers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night when Debajit Barman, a private tutor and TMC supporter, was attacked by a group of alleged BJP workers while on his way home. His pregnant wife, Priya Pal, intervened to save him but was also beaten up. After the assault, both were admitted to the sub-divisional hospital. On Friday, Pal delivered a stillborn baby, as per Barman's statement to The Telegraph.
Doctors had earlier estimated that Pal would deliver the baby in December. Barman has registered a complaint against 10 persons at the Sahebganj police station. So far, two persons allegedly associated with the BJP have been arrested in connection with the case.
The police action follows another incident more than a year ago when the BJP had alleged that its eighth-month pregnant supporter had been assaulted by TMC workers in Cooch Behar’s Salmara village in Dinhata. The party claimed that several of its workers, including the pregnant woman, were injured after their homes were attacked.
However, the TMC had blamed the BJP’s internal rivalry for the incident. 'We don’t believe in violence,' said the TMC leader Dipak Bhattacharya at that time. 'It was locals who attacked the BJP functionaries to protest the efforts to conduct [special intensive revision] and impose [National Register of Citizens].'
