Ten bodies have been recovered from the Gandak river in Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts of Uttar Pradesh, believed to be Nepalis. The toll in the flood and mudslide in Nepal increased to 616 with more than 2,400 persons still missing.
In the past two days, ten adult bodies have been recovered from the Gandak river in the Indian states of Maharajganj and Kushinagar. According to The Indian Express, all deceased are believed to be Nepalis, as stated by unidentified officials. These bodies have been kept at mortuaries for 72 hours, during which no one has come forward to claim them. If no identification occurs within this period, further action will be taken in accordance with government guidelines, as mentioned by Maharajganj Additional District Magistrate Prashant Kumar.
The Gandak river, also known as the Narayani in Nepal, flows from Nepal into India before joining the Ganga. The river has swept away several other objects including vehicles, household items, gas cylinders, drums, furniture, logs, and other debris which have been washing up along its banks.
The floods occurred in Rasuwa district along Nepal's northern border with China on Wednesday. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge. The toll in the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal increased to 616 on Saturday, with more than 2,400 persons still missing.
More than 4,400 persons had been rescued, as reported by Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
