In Ujjain, police personnel resorted to tear gas against Muslim residents protesting the proposed demolition of a portion of Shahi Masjid. The administration seeks to widen the road ahead of Simhastha religious gathering.
In Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, tensions escalated on Monday as Muslim residents continued their protest against the proposed demolition of a part of Shahi Masjid. On Sunday night, protesters stayed inside the premises overnight to prevent its demolition, according to The Indian Express.
Stone-pelting was reported during the protests against the proposed removal of the Shahi Masjid for Simhastha Kumbh preparations. Police fired tear gas shells to control the crowd, as reported by ANI.
The administration had brought heavy machinery and several companies of police to the area on Sunday night in an attempt to persuade residents and members of the mosque committee to cooperate with the proposed demolition. However, clashes ensued as the Ujjain Municipal Corporation began tearing down portions of the mosque on Monday.
Before the clashes, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma informed The Indian Express that efforts were being made to resolve the issue through dialogue and that the demolition had been temporarily halted.
A petition filed by the mosque committee challenging the proposed demolition will be heard in the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday. On September 9, the High Court’s Indore Bench dismissed two petitions challenging the municipal corporation’s proposal.
