On Monday, September 7, 2026, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah will chair the 28th meeting of the Western Zonal Council in Panaji, the capital of Goa. This meeting marks the fifth Zonal Council established under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956.

The Western Zonal Council comprises the States of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The Council's Chairman is Shri Amit Shah, while the Chief Minister of Goa serves as its Vice-Chairman on a rotational basis among member states. Each state in the western region contributes one senior minister to the Zonal Council.

The meeting is being organized by the Inter-State Council Secretariat, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, and hosted by the Government of Goa. Senior officers from the Government of India and the State Governments/Union Territory will also participate in the meeting.

In addition to Shri Amit Shah, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji has emphasized the need for cooperation among States and the Centre to achieve all-round development through the principle of cooperative federalism. The Zonal Council serves as a platform for enhancing mutual cooperation on issues affecting multiple states or the Centre and the states.
