Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurates day-care cancer facility at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College, Vidisha, MP. TMC and DAE collaborate to strengthen cancer care services.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, today inaugurated a day-care cancer facility at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College, Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. This initiative is part of a larger national effort led by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) through Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) to expand cancer care facilities across the country. The goal is to make quality treatment available closer to patients' homes due to the rising cancer burden in India.
The day-care facility marks the first step in a phased expansion of cancer care services at Vidisha Medical College. TMC has provided a structured action plan covering various aspects, including equipment and drug procurement, medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiotherapy, pathology, community outreach, cancer registries, and palliative care.
Two doctors from the Medicine Department and seven nursing officers from Vidisha have already completed dedicated oncology training at ACTREC, Mumbai, with training for surgeons and surgical staff scheduled to commence shortly. The programme also includes strengthening cancer diagnostics and pathology services, advanced radiation treatment, and palliative care services.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the need to take specialized cancer-care capabilities beyond major metropolitan centres and pointed out that the Vidisha initiative is part of a larger effort to develop cancer care capabilities according to local requirements. He also highlighted the significance of prevention and early detection in cancer care, stating TMC's plan to establish a centre of excellence for this purpose at the medical college.
