President Trump announced a deal between the US and Denmark regarding Greenland's security. The agreement addresses all US security concerns at no cost.
On Friday, United States President Donald Trump declared an agreement reached with Denmark granting Washington 'permanent control over security' in Greenland. This development comes after Trump's repeated calls for ownership of the Danish territory citing national security concerns.
Greenland, though self-governed, relies on Denmark for defense and foreign policy. According to Trump, this agreement satisfies all US security concerns with no associated costs to Washington.
The deal, to be signed next week at the UN General Assembly, is subject to necessary parliamentary procedures in both Denmark and Greenland. The US president announced immediate plans to develop a substantial military presence in Greenland following the agreement.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement would strengthen 'our common security' in the Arctic region and North Atlantic Area, benefiting NATO and Europe as well. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed encouragement, stating that the deal would ensure and strengthen the security of the region.
It is important to note that Moscow and Beijing have not made any territorial claims over Greenland.
