A gym owner in Uttarakhand was arrested for allegedly assaulting a trader. The arrest follows an earlier incident where the gym owner opposed harassment of a Muslim shopkeeper by alleged Bajrang Dal members.
On Thursday, Dehradun gym owner Deepak Kumar was arrested for allegedly assaulting a trader, according to reports from The Indian Express and The Times of India. This arrest comes after Kumar had opposed the harassment of an elderly Muslim shopkeeper by alleged Bajrang Dal members in January. The initial complaint against Kumar was registered under provisions pertaining to criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, but sections pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups and voluntarily causing hurt were later added to the FIR. According to Sarvesh Panwar, the senior superintendent of police at Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal, Kumar allegedly assaulted the trader after a dispute over a social media post. Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was invoked for Kumar's preventive arrest to stop a potential serious, cognizable crime. The administration’s plans to demolish portions of a mosque in Uttarakhand had led to violence near the structure on Monday, with Muslim residents protesting against the notice.
