Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal is one of over 33 lakh voters in Delhi who received a notice during the voter roll revision process, questioning their eligibility to vote. The notices were issued for various reasons such as discrepancies between names, age differences, and unmatched records.
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal raised questions about the voter roll revision process in Delhi after receiving an 'unmapped' notice. In a press conference on Sunday, he pointed out that his enumeration form details matched those in his 1998 voter record, which had also been verified by a booth-level officer. However, his notice cited a discrepancy between his and his father’s names in the current electoral roll and their names in the electoral rolls prepared during the previous SIR.
Sibal questioned why he was sent a notice, stating, ‘Am I not a citizen of this country?’. He also mentioned that he had not received a physical copy of the notice. The notice was among 33 lakh issued to voters in Delhi, accounting for about one-third of the 97.5 lakh voters included in the draft voter rolls.
The verification of such cases is scheduled to be completed by October 29, while the final electoral rolls are slated to be published on November 4. Besides Sibal, other prominent figures who have received similar notices include External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, Comptroller and Auditor General K Sanjay Murthy, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kailash Gahlot, Hindustan Times reported. The notices have been issued for various reasons, with failure to be mapped to the previous special intensive revision accounting for 42% and name mismatches accounting for 41%, according to an analysis by Hindustan Times.
Also receiving notices were Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister Ajay Kumar Sood, former NITI Aayog Vice Chairperson Arvind Panagariya, Central Bureau of Investigation Director Praveen Sood. The list also includes Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, and several serving and retired bureaucrats.
The notices have been issued to address a variety of discrepancies in the voter rolls. In addition to name mismatches and unmatched records, age differences accounted for 16% of the notices, while 59,791 notices had no reason listed, the newspaper reported.
