A Delhi court has granted conditional bail to leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party, including Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ratna Singh, on condition they maintain peace for a year.
According to Ratna Singh, the campaign's legal head, a Delhi executive magistrate court ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka on Sunday. The court stipulated that they should maintain peace and not breach it for one year.
The three were detained on Saturday from inside an aircraft shortly after it landed in Delhi ahead of a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. It is also reported that YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released from Gurugram Police custody in the early hours of Sunday.
The protests had been called by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign and student groups affiliated to the Left parties. Among the thousands detained during the day were former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, as well as journalists, including Scroll reporters Ayush Tiwari and Shoaib Daniyal in Delhi and Divya Aslesha in Pune. Activists and lawyers, including activists Neha Bora, Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan and Jean Drèze, were also detained, along with other Opposition leaders and protesters.
The Delhi Police released all detainees on Saturday night except the Cockroach Janta Party leaders. In recent weeks, protests have been held in several parts of the country calling for Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
