A Delhi court ordered the release of several leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, and other political figures who were detained during protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The detainees included former Chief Ministers, journalists, activists, lawyers, opposition leaders, and protesters.
On Sunday, a Delhi executive magistrate court ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka. The campaign's legal head Ratna Singh confirmed the release, stating that the court imposed a condition for them to maintain peace and avoid breaching it for a period of one year. Previously, they had been detained on Saturday from inside an aircraft upon landing in Delhi ahead of the protests.
The court also ordered the release of YouTuber Dhruv Rathee who was detained from his home in Gurugram earlier on Sunday. Among the thousands detained during the day were former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, as well as journalists, including Scroll reporters Ayush Tiwari and Shoaib Daniyal in Delhi and Divya Aslesha in Pune.
Activists and lawyers, including activists Neha Bora, Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, and Jean Drèze, were also detained, along with other Opposition leaders and protesters. The Delhi Police released all detainees on Saturday night except the Cockroach Janta Party leaders.
In recent weeks, protests have been held in several parts of the country calling for Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
