Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Mission Mausam in January 2025, aiming to make the country 'Weather-ready and Climate-smart'. Various initiatives have been implemented to strengthen weather forecasting, improve prediction capabilities, deploy advanced instruments, enhance high-performance computing systems, and develop a Decision Support System.

On January 14, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Mission Mausam with the goal of making India a 'Weather-ready and Climate-smart' nation. The initiative seeks to strengthen various components of Earth System observations for an early warning system and seamless weather and climate services. Key objectives include developing cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies, deploying next-generation radars, wind profilers, and satellites equipped with advanced instrument payloads, enhancing high-performance computing systems, improving prediction capabilities, creating a state-of-the-art Decision Support System (DSS), establishing capacity building and research collaborations, and developing data-driven methods including AI/ML.

To achieve these goals, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has progressively strengthened its observational network through the deployment of 29 C-Band DWRs, 45 X-Band DWRs, and 12 S-Band DWRs across the country. These new radars are in addition to the existing 50 Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) operated by IMD and other MoES institutions and ISRO.

In Maharashtra, the current DWR network includes stations in Mumbai, Vasai, Virar, Kalyan, and Dombivali. Under Mission Mausam, various global and regional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) modeling systems have been implemented to provide seamless short-range, medium-range, and extended-range weather forecasts. The computing facilities have also been substantially increased to integrate voluminous data and run mesoscale, regional, and global models at higher resolution.

To strengthen disaster early warning systems, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has taken several measures across India, including in Maharashtra. These measures include augmenting the observational network, developing indigenous weather forecasting systems, issuing impact-based forecasts, creating 'Mausamgram' for hyperlocal forecasts, and developing climate hazard and vulnerability maps.
