The Central Government has approved funding for the upgrade of National Highway-10 between Rangpo and Ranipool, with major engineering works planned.
The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the Government has sanctioned 993.64 crore rupees for the development of National Highway-10 in Sikkim. The project aims to upgrade the corridor into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders.
Significant engineering works are planned to enhance safety and resilience in the challenging Himalayan terrain. These include the construction of tunnels, viaducts, bridges, and cut-and-cover sections, as well as comprehensive slope-protection measures to address vulnerable sliding and sinking zones.
According to Mr Gadkari, the upgraded corridor will provide safer, faster, and more resilient connectivity to Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim. It is also expected to boost the movement of tourists, agricultural and horticultural produce, and essential goods. Additionally, the Minister emphasized its strategic importance for the movement of defence personnel and supplies, and its contribution to Sikkim’s broader socio-economic development.
