External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar calls for fair representation of Africa in the UN Security Council and emphasizes India's efforts to secure permanent membership for the African Union. He also highlights the growing economic ties between India and Africa.
During a speech at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar advocated for reform of the United Nations Security Council. He expressed concern that India and Africa should not be underrepresented in global decision-making bodies, emphasizing the need for fair African representation in both permanent and non-permanent membership.
Jaishankar's call came as part of his three-nation African tour, during which he addressed the need for permanent and non-permanent membership representation for Africa. He recalled India’s efforts during its 2023 G20 presidency to secure permanent membership for the African Union.
In addition to UN Security Council reform, Jaishankar highlighted the growing economic ties between India and Africa. He stated that bilateral trade between the two regions nears 100 billion US dollars. He further mentioned over 220 Indian-supported development projects worth approximately 4.5 billion dollars have been completed across Africa.
Encouraging increased investment from Indian businesses, Jaishankar urged stronger cooperation in food security, agriculture and sustainable development for mutual benefits.
