Indian contingent in the 23rd Commonwealth Games

Indian athletes make progress in various sports as the 10-day multi-event commences in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games kicked off in Glasgow, Scotland, marking the beginning of a ten-day sporting spectacle. The event was officially declared open by King Charles III, attended by Queen Camilla, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare at the OVO Hydro Arena on July 28th evening. A total of 74 nations are participating in this edition.

The Indian contingent, led by flag bearer Mirabai Chanu and ceremonial baton bearer Lovlina Borgohain, was warmly welcomed by the Glasgow crowd as they marched into the arena. Before the opening ceremony, Lovlina Borgohain had already advanced to the women’s 75 kg boxing semifinals after receiving a bye. With only five athletes in the draw, three boxers, including Lovlina, progressed straight to the last four.

India's lawn bowls contingent also made an impressive start, registering two wins from their opening matches. On the first day of competition, Indian athletes will compete in several events such as gymnastics, swimming, and judo.

In the men’s team and individual gymnastics events, Tapeshwarnath Das, Swathish KP, Tapan Mohanty, and Yogeshwar Singh are scheduled to participate. Para swimmer RVVBK Budigina will compete in the men’s 100 metres freestyle S13 event, while Srihari Nataraj will compete in the men’s 50 metres backstroke heats followed by the semifinals.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games features ten sports, nine fewer than the previous edition in Birmingham. The sports include athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, and judo.
