Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, announced the adoption of 'Chennai Declaration' during the closing session of the 14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meet. The declaration focuses on sustainable development, social inclusiveness, and technology use to improve lives across BRICS nations.
In the culmination of the 14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meet chaired by India, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh declared the unanimous adoption of 'Chennai Declaration'. This declaration reaffirms BRICS commitment to construct an effective, resilient, and future-ready framework in science, technology, and innovation (STI).
The Chennai Consensus, adopted under India’s BRICS Chairship, underscores a people-centered and humanity-first approach. It emphasizes sustainable development, resilient growth, social inclusiveness, and the utilization of innovation and technology to enhance the welfare and quality of life for individuals across BRICS nations.
During his closing remarks, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh stated that the discussions had underscored STI's crucial role in building a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future. He highlighted a broad range of topics discussed, including Artificial Intelligence, High-Performance Computing, quantum technologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, health, climate, and sustainability.
The Declaration documents the growing maturity and depth of BRICS STI cooperation, with ongoing collaborative activity across 14 thematic Working Groups, 11 editions of the BRICS Young Scientist Forum, nine editions of the Young Innovators Prize, and nine calls under the BRICS STI Framework Programme.
The Ministerial Meeting also endorsed the BRICS STI Calendar of Activities for 2026–2027, ensuring continuity in Working Groups, Steering Committee, Senior Officials’ process, Young Scientist Forum, Young Innovator Prize, and other thematic activities. The Chennai Consensus records the transition of the BRICS STI Ministerial process to the next Chairship, with the subsequent Ministerial Meeting scheduled under China’s Chairship in 2027.
