CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained from an aircraft by the police upon arrival in Delhi. Meanwhile, protests have been restricted with hundreds of protesters detained and several metro stations closed.
On Saturday, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by the police from an aircraft upon their arrival in Delhi at around 10:20 am. The incident was captured on a video posted online by the CJP political campaign, which alleges that this move was orchestrated to thwart the peaceful protest. The CJP condemned the act as a 'blatant violation of the freedom of movement' and demanded the immediate release of Dipke, Das, and Ranka.
The protest at Jantar Mantar has been organized by the CJP and student groups affiliated with left parties. However, ahead of the demonstration, the police imposed several restrictions to deter protesters from gathering in the national capital, including detaining persons, cancelling trains, closing 45 metro stations, and suspending mobile internet in central Delhi.
Hundreds of protesters were detained by the police on Saturday morning, including YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and CJP’s legal affairs head Ratna Singh. The organisers described these measures as intimidation by the authorities.
In recent weeks, protests have been held in several parts of the country calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The demonstrations on Saturday were expected to begin at 10 am.
